Close to the surf town of Puerto Escondido on Mexico’s Oaxaca coast, Casa Tiny is a dream house inspired by Henry David Thoreau’s “Walden” and brought to life by architect Aranza de Ariño and director Claudio Sodi.

Thoreau’s maxim of “Simplify, simplify, simplify!” is underscored throughout the casita’s understated lines.

The mezzanine bedroom features a large window under which guests can lie and watch stars race across the inky night sky. In the kitchen, a poured concrete benchtop extends through huge shuttered doors that can be thrown open to the garden, bringing the outside in. Soft diffused light pours in through narrow windows. Outside, a turquoise dip pool provides respite from the midday heat, the scent of rosemary fills the air and hummingbirds dart throughout the bushes.

This tiny paradise feels perfectly isolated and there’s blissfully little to do if you choose, but gems Hotel Escondido and the incredible artist retreat of Casa Wabi are close nearby.
