Too Many Cooks: Avocado Toast

You’ll be hearing from the staff at Food52 in Too Many Cooks, our group column in which we pool our answers to questions about food, cooking, life, and more.

If the walls of the Food52 office could talk, they would probably tell you about how much we love avocado toast. So simple and filling, we could write countless odes to this wonderful treat (but we will spare you those today). Avocado toast has become quite the popular item recently, and we couldn’t be happier. With Avocado Toast Week wrapping up today (though our love will last forever), we thought we’d poll the Food52 staffers and ask:

How do you make (or where have you eaten) the perfect avocado toast? What do you do to dress it up?

Stephanie: I like to have only avocado and a fried egg on mine. And sometimes a fried halloumi slice, cut into strips, because it’s salty like feta but has yummy, crispy edges.

Posie: I like simple and uncomplicated avocado toast. But, it is very good if you top it with gomasio seasoning (which is a mix of black sesame, ocean salt, and seaweed).

Gabriella P: I go for the Whole Foods “Seeduction” bread (sue me, I love a bad pun), heavily toasted, then I add mashed avocado, Sriracha, and salt on top.

Emi: I start with whole-grain bread and add some mashed avocado mixed with a little bit of sambal oelek and a dash of fish sauce.

Lauren K.: My first avocado toast ever was at a little cafe in East London circa 2007, and while other all avocado toasts since have been delicious, this one is the most memorable. They served it on freshly baked baguette with chili, flaky salt, and lime.

Erin: My favorite style is mashed avocado, topped with flaky salt and a huge dollop of hot pepper jelly. Also, the bread should be a little burnt.

Haley: My homemade favorite is mashed avocado on a brown rice cake with Maldon sea salt and a dash of balsamic vinegar.

Karl: I can’t say my avocado toast is perfect, given I’m usually just using store-bought sandwich bread; but I enjoy buttering my toast, adding slices of avocado, and sprinkling it with celery salt.
