Racking up a small but significant point for small-time entrepreneurs, Washington State has passed the Cottage Food Act, allowing certain foods deemed as “low-risk” to be manufactured and sold out of home kitchens (renting or buying a commercial kitchen, with all the required certifications and rules, is a pricey business). As reported by Slate, this includes cakes, cookies, jams, and jellies — elementary school bakesales rejoice!
