Tomorrow is the first Friday of Lent. Categorized by self-denial and sacrifice, Lent begins each year the day after Fat Tuesday and subsequently imparts millions of Christians with symptoms of gustatory whiplash. A literal feast turned famine, modern-day participants traditionally choose one vice to give up until Easter as a sign of devotion and spiritual renewal. In the wake of Mardi Gras gluttony, there is no bigger challenge. From chocolate, to french fries, to caffeine (what? who?), the weeks leading to Easter are among the hardest — not only for Lent’s participants, but for everyone around them. For among all raw emotions, the scariest is hangry.
Fridays will be the most difficult, when, in addition to each person’s chosen sacrifice, he or she must also deny themselves meat. How do we navigate this harrowing terrain? Is there a panacea to the emotional rollercoaster that will inevitably ensue? Fear not, for fish is here to smooth the waters. Here are 9 fish recipes to get you and yours through the next 40 days and 40 nights.
